Karsha monastery is the largest monastery of Zanskar. The complete name of Karsha monastery is ‘Karsha Chamspaling’. Karsha monastery in Zanskar is also known as Kursha monastery, Karsha Gompa and Kursha Gompa. This monastery was first founded by Phagspa Shesrab. The monastery prospered and flourished because of the hard work of Dorje Shesrab, the Teacher. Today the monastery stands fruitfully because of his efforts. In this monastery Gelukpa order was introduced by Shesrab Zangpo of Stod.

That is where Khardung La Pass, meaning the ‘Pass of Lower Castle,’ is located on the way from Leh to the Nubra Valley in Ladakh. The Border Roads Organization proudly proclaim Khardung La Pass to he be highest motorable road in the world. Khardung La is the gateway to Siachen Glacier and also connects Leh to Nubra Valley. Siachen is around 40km north of Leh by road on the way to the Nubra.
