Agasthyakoodam Mountain in Kerela is part of the lofty Sahyadri range of mountains. It rises to a height of 1890 meters above sea level which makes it the second highest peak in Kerala.

Agasthyakoodam is highly respected by both the Hindus as well as the Buddhists. This is because the Hindus believe that this mountain is the home of Sage Agastya, a disciple of Lord Shiva and the Buddhists think that this is the abode of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.

Tourist Attractions in Agasthyakoodam :

A visit to the Agasthya Vanam Biological Park will surely be very interesting. Covering an area of 23 sq km, the park was established in the year 1992 with the objective of restoring plant life. So you will get to see a large number of rare trees. Other than exotic colorful orchids, a large number of herbs with a great deal of medicinal value can be found here. The herbs number more than two thousand and are used for Ayurveda.

You can also trek to reach the top of Agasthyakoodam or Agasthya Malai as it is popularly known. However Trekking is permitted only in the months of December, January, February and April. A distance of 28 km needs to be covered to reach the top and that takes about 2 days. Keep in mind the fact that passes have to be obtained from the Wild Life Warden, Forest Department, PTP Nagar, Tiruvananthapuram for trekking.

Once you reach Tiruvananthapuram, you can avail of any local means of transportation like buses and taxis to reach Agasthyakoodam.

Best Time to Visit :

The best time for a tour to Agasthyakoodam is from December to April because this is the best season for trekking in the forests. Trekking permits are issued by the Wildlife Warden, Forest Department, PTP Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram. The trekking journey of around 30 km is a two-day program.
