Annapoorneshwari Temple In Karnataka

Annapoorneshwari Temple is an ancient and revered shrine located in the picturesque surroundings of Horanadu in the state of Karnataka. Horanadu is 100 kms south-west of Chikmagalur. On an average around 5000 devotees are said to visit the Devi temple every day located in the midst of thick forests and valleys.

About Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple :

Annapoorneshwari temple is picturesquely situated amidst thick forests and valleys in horanadu near to udupi and mangalore in karnataka. Sage Agastya is said to have installed the deity. The sanctum was renovated in recent years by a learned astrologer, Venkitasubba Jois. The deity has been designed in a unique manner: the single image depicts the Devi annapoorneshwari standing on a peeta with Devi Gayatri, Sri Chakra, Shanku and Chakra in Her four hands. The sanctum is surrounded by Adi Sesha and the Padma Peeta is formed by Ashtagaja, Koorma and others.

The name “Annapoorneshwari” means “Feeding one and all”. The uniqueness of this temple is everybody who visit this temple are provided with food (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) and place to sleep in the temple premises. Shri Bheemeshwara Joshi is the present Dharmakartaru of Annapoorneshwari temple.

The Annapoorneshwari Temple(Kannada: ಹೊರನಾಡು ಅನ್ನಪೂರ್ಣೆಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಾಲಯ) is located at Horanadu India 100 km from Chikmagalur in the thick forests and valleys of the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Also called “Sri Kshethra Horanadu”, it is situated on the banks of river Bhadra in a remote corner of Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, surrounded by the natural vegetation, forest, green lands, and natural beauty of the Western Ghats. This ancient Hindu temple of Goddess Annapoorneshwari has been restored and renamed as the Adi-Shaktyatmaka Shree Annapoorneshwari. The single image is of the Goddess Annapoorneshwari standing on a peeta with Shanku, Chakra, Sri Chakra and Devi Gayathri in her four hands.

The great deity of Adishakthyathmaka Sri Annapoorneshwari’s prathistapana was done by His Holiness Agasthya Maharishi several centuries back. The hereditary dharmakartharu of our family started 400 years back. Till the 5th Dharmakartharu, the temple was having a very small structure surrounded by full of natural vegetation and forest. Even then at least one or more people used to visit the temple, have pooja and were provided with free food (annaprasadam) and shelter and it is continued till date.

The name Annapoorneshwari means “Feeding one and all”. All who visit this temple are provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner and also tea and coffee who need. And provide place to sleep on the temple premises.

Annapoorneshwari Temple  Mythology :

The main deity, Goddess Annapoorneshwari, was installed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. Recently, in 1973, a new idol of the main deity was installed at the temple. The idol, made of gold, is captivatingly beautiful. The temple is now known as Adi – Shaktyatmaka Shree Annapoorneshwari Temple.

The Goddess is depicted with four hands, holding the Shanka, Chakra, Sri Chakra and Gayathri mantra. Annapoorneshwari is a form of Goddess Parvati. It is believed that once Lord Shiva was cursed and when he came here and accepted alms from Annapoorneshwari, the curse was lifted. Annapoorneshwari means one who provides food. It is believed by devotees that whoever has the Goddess’ darshan and blessing will never go hungry in their life.

Boarding and lodging is provided by Temple trust. Temple guest houses are available to stay. If the rooms are not available, visitors can keep their bags and luggages at luggage room and and sleep at the temple premisis.

How to Get to Annapoorneshwari Temple :

Horanadu is located 330 km away from Bangalore and 75 km away from Sringeri. Regular bus services are available from most places in Karnataka including Bangalore.
