About Assam State Museum, Guwahati :

The Assam State Museum was first opened to the public in 1940. Initialy it was established as a non-Governmental structure but later on The museum was taken over by the State Government of Assam. It is located in the eastern part of the Guwahati city-centre near Dighalipukhuri tank. The State museum is extremly famous for its amazing anthology antiques of the prehistoric times.

Many Archeological displays are the major attraction in Assam State museum for the tourists. Actually the total region is well known for its wilderness with its flora and fauna. The Museum consists of a huge collection of a wide variety of items showing the rich cultural legacy of Assam as well northest India. This also includes most authentic prehistoric sculptures, metal, ivory paintings, woodwork and costumes etc.

The Assam State Museum represents the cultural diversity of the region exhibiting weaving, musical instruments, ancient coins, religious sculptures, manuscripts and crafts. For this, Academicians termed the state museum as Anthropological Paradise. The State museum even houses a reference library. Many other collection includes stone and copper plate inscriptions from the 5th century, terracotta pieces and costumes with a 12th century sculpture of ‘Surya’. The state museum of Assam consists of many archeological objects includes prehistoric artifacts and fossils, seals and coins, ruined and stone, terracotta sculptures, old inscription and manuscripts are very important.

Assam State Museum contains a wide range of handloom materials also. The time schedule for wondering Assam State Museum is from 10 am to 5 pm (summer) upto to 4.30 pm (winters) and closed on Mondays. Tourist can snaps phtographs only after the permissions. Being placed in the heart of Guwahati it is easily accessible from all sides.

By Road: NH-31, NH-37 and NH-40 pass through Guwahati. It is a three hour drive to the Bhutanese border town of Samdrup Jongkhar and to the capital of Meghalaya, Shillong.

By Rail: Guwahati is connected by train with major cities like Kolkata, New Delhi, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram,Chennai and Mumbai.

By Air: Guwahati has daily flights from Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi, and twice weekly flights connecting to Mumbai and Bangkok. There are connections to most North East Indian cities from Guwahati.
