Bangalore’s Beautiful Someshwara Temple

Bangalore’s Beautiful Someshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was built by Kempegowda at Ulsoor. It is one of the oldest and biggest temples of Bangalore, reminding us of the rich heritage of the Chola Kingdom. The marvelous architecture of the temple with glorious Rajagopuram (tower) and Dhwajastambha (massive pillar) in the entrance of the temple attracts devotees from far off places. Presently the temple is under the supervision of Endowment Department of the Karnataka Government.

About Someshwara Temple :

Apart from Lord Shiva other deities of Kamakshamma, Arunachaleswara, Bhimeswara, Nanjundeswara and Panchalingeswara are worshiped inSomeshwara Temple. The grand temple was built by the rulers of the Chola dynasty, but Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore gave it a complete structure with the fine Rajagopuram and well defined compound of the temple.

The architecture of the main temple of Someshwara Temple is elaborate, with many intricately carved pillars. On the walls of the temple scriptures are inscribed. One of the characteristics of the pillar is that when it is is silent all around and you can strike the pillars and hear the sound of guitar. Within the campus of the temple there are many trees and flowering plants that add to the beauty of the temple.

One of the striking thing about Someshwara Temple is that all the three main deities of Hindu mythology – Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu, are worshiped here. A number of festivals are celebrated in the temple, the main attraction among them is the Shivaratri festival, in the month of February. Thousands of devotees come here on this day to worship Lord Shiva and the Pancha Lingeswaras. On the full moon day Brahmotsava is celebrated.

Another festival is celebrated in Someshwara Temple in the month of April, is the Pallaki Utsava festival, while Goddess Kamakshamma, is taken in a Pallaki (palanquin) in a procession around the temple. Daily poojas are done daily in the morning and evening.
