The Devikulam Lake, also known as the Sita Devi Lake, is a spot of unsurpassable scenic beauty. The sparkling crystal clear waters, the tall trees and flowering shrubs on the banks and the twittering songbirds make it an ideal picnic spot. Besides being sacred due to the legend involving Goddess Sita, the lake is famed to have immense therapeutic properties as well. This is because of the mineral water fountains and natural springs from which curative minerals gush forth with the water.

It is 1800 meter above sea level and16 km. from Munnar Devikulam is a small and beautiful hill station. The Devi lake with its mineral water is a natural gift. 7 kms from munnar, this hill station with its lawns, flora and fauna and the cool air is a experience. The sita devi lake with its mineral waters and its surroundings is a good picnic spot. The lake is also ideal for fishing.

Places Of  Interest in  Devikulam :

Idukki: Idukki town is nearby attraction of devikulam. This rugged mountainous and forested region is famous tourist destination of Kerala. Idukki is famous for the first double curvature Arch dam in India and has a wildlife sanctuary. Idukki town also has a large reservoir formed by three dams namely Idukki, Kulamavu and Cheruthony dam.

Munnar: Located 55 K.M from Idukki Town at an altitude of 1524m in above the sea level, Munnar is also a nearby hill station to devikulam. Munnar is a visual retreat and offers a spectacular picture of confluence of three mountain streams namely Kannimalayar, Nallathanni and Kundala. Waterways and Anamudi, the highest peak of south India available in Munnar provides an awesome scope for boating and mountaineering respectively.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary : Another nearby attraction to devikulam(50 km away) is Chinnar Wildlife Sanctury. With a sandalwood forest at the end, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary falls away as a thorny, rain-shadowed scrub jungle which is unique in Kerala. Located around 60 km north of devikulam, Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is a home for diverse flora and fauna. This wildlife sanctuary is home to endangered species of both the grizzled giant squirrel and star tortoise along with large population of gaur. Deep within the sanctuary, there is massive Thkoovanam falls on the river Chinnar, which also offers a wonderful view.

Mangalam Devi Temple  : Mangalam Devi Temple is an ancient temple, located 15 km from Thekkady. The ruins of this Pandyan style temple is positioned amidst dense forest at the top of a 1337 m peak and gives a magnificent view. On the occasion of “Chaitra Purnima’, this temple is bedecked and visitors are allowed to enter. It is also a nearby attraction to devikulam.

Kumily : Kumily is a border town, positioned just north of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary at Kerala- Tamilnadu border. Located just 4km from Thekkady town, Kumily is a busy town having numerous spice shops. A boat trip on the tranquil lake of Kumily town is the best way to have a close look on the wildlife of the park.

How To reach :

Air: Coimbatore, 105-km from Ooty, is the nearest airport. It has daily flights to and from Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin and Trivandrum.

Rail: Ooty is on the narrow gauge railway connected to Mettupalayam (47-km), which is directly connected to Coimbatore and Chennai. The famous toy train connects Ooty with Mettupalayam and Coonoor.

Road: A good network of roads and national highways connect Ooty with all major towns and cities. There are regular bus services to and from Coimbatore, Trichy, Bangalore, Madurai, Kanyakumari, Mysore, Palghat, Calicut, Tirupati and other important destinations in South India. Ooty is also well connected with major cities of Kerala and Karnataka.

Travel Tips :

  • The climate is mild with a slight chill after nightfall so carry cotton shawls and jackets
  • If you want to fish in the lake seek permission from Tata Tea
