Karighatta is a hill that has been mentioned in the ancient texts, as ‘Neelachala’ meaning ‘Blue Mountain’. Having an elevation of 2,697 m above sea level, the hill is home to an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vaikunta Srinivasa, popularly known as Lord Vishnu. Installed by Birgu Sage, the idol is black in colour and 6 ft tall.
Yoga Srinivasa and Bhoga Srinivasa idols are present near the main deity. In a separate sanctum, Goddess Padmavathi, the consort of Lord Srinivasa is installed. Facing the main deity along with the Garudastamba, or the pillar of Garuda, lies the statue of Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Srinivasa.
Beside the hill, flows River Loakpavani, a tributary of River Cauvery. This river joins River Cauvery at the foothills and continues to flow to meet Pashchima Vahini, or westwards branch of River Cauvery at Sangam. From the top of the hills, tourists can avail views of Chamundi Hills, Mysore City and many othert places. Patches of grasslands, deciduous forests and tamarind trees are found on the hill.

Karighatta is a small hill station which is around 20 km from Mysore. In kannada ‘kari ghatta’ means ‘black hills’.
It is believed that the great sage Bhrugu has done the “Prathishthapana” of the deity. It seems that Bhrugu had some curse and got rid off it when he came to this place. This is a place, which has its roots even in Puranas. There is also another belief that all the ill effects, which one is suffering, can be got rid off by performing some aesthetic poojas in this place. There are thousands of devotees, who believe in this God Shrinivasa.
Karighatta is situated 24 km from Mysore and 6 km from Srirangapatna, Karighatta is religious place that has found its name mentioned in the Purana as “Neelachala” meaning the mountain in Sanskrit. There is a temple at the peak of Karighatta which lures pilgrims in thousands every year. An interesting feature of this place is the long and sharp grass called “dharbe” in the local language. From the hilltop, the views are of magnificent green trees and faraway land. The tributaries of Cauvery and Lokapavani flowing together are a wonderful sight from a high altitude. One can either drive to this place or take a tourist bus that runs on the Arkere-Bannoor route.

Karighatta has a Hindu temple devoted to a form of Hindu god Vishnu, called “Karigirivasa”.
