The mythological story of the Kund as described in the Srimad Bhagavata, Kalika Purana and in the Mahabharata goes as, one day Renuka, Parsurama’s mother had gone to fetch water. On her return she saw King Chitranatha amidst heavenlyfairies. She got attracted towards him and hence was late to the Ashram. Her husband, Sage Jamadagni was worried on her delay as they were getting late for the puja. He used his divine power to find the reason for her delay. When he got to know he was furious and asked his sons to kill her. None of the sons could have the courage except Lord Parsurama. But his axe got stuck to his hand. After beheading his mother, when he was asked to wish for something by his father, he desired the comeback of his mother. He was very guilty of his doing and was advised to take a dip into the holy pond of Lord Brahma. Parsurama did accordingly and the place where his axe dropped came to be known as Parsurama Kund. After the axe fell from his hand, Parasuram threw it into the mountains. The axe slit the mountains and the spot where it fell became the origin of the River Lohit. The epics say that the water of the Kund has the immense power of relieving one of their sins.
