Santa Fe

Santa Fe is the capital of the state of New Mexico. It is the fourth-largest city in the state and is the seat of Santa Fe County. Santa Fe (literally ‘holy faith’ in Spanish) has a population of 72,000. San Miguel Chapel in Santa Fe is said to be the oldest standing church structure in the US. The adobe walls were constructed around 1610 when the city of Santa Fe was founded. Foundations of the first church remain observable under the sanctuary of the present structure. Archaeological investigations beneath these foundations reveal evidence of Native American occupation of the site as early and 1300.The San Miguel Mission Chapel, often known as the oldest church in the country, is the key site to the Barrio de Analco. Santa Fe is a Beautiful Place For Vacations.This National Landmark barrio was founded by a group of Mexican Indians from Tlaxcala. The adobe church was constructed under the direction Franciscan friars to serve a small congregation of soldiers, laborers and Indians who lived in the Analco Barrio. It was partially destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. By the early 18th century San Miguel had become one of the principal ecclesiastical buildings in the provincial capital. The present building dates from 1710, although it has undergone significant structural changes

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty (French: Statue de la Liberté), or, more formally, Liberty Enlightening the World was presented to the United States by the people of France in 1886. Standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, it welcomes visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans traveling by ship.The copper-clad statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence and was given to the United States to represent the friendship established during the American Revolution.Fredéric Auguste Bartholdi sculpted the statueand obtained a U.S. patent for its structure. Maurice Koechlin – chief engineer of Gustave Eiffel’s engineering company and designer of the Eiffel Tower – engineered the internal structure.

Moody Gardens

Moody Gardens is a tourist complex in Galveston, Texas.Moody Gardens features three main pyramid attractions: the Aquarium, which is one of the largest in the world and holds many species of fish and other sealife; the Rainforest Pyramid, which contains tropical fauna and flora; and the Discovery Pyramid, which focuses on science-oriented exhibits and activities.Another major attraction is Palm Beach, a landscaped sandy area with freshwater lagoons and offering children’s activities. Moody Gardens also has a Ride Film Theater with motion-based pod seating, a 3-D IMAX theater, a paddlewheel cruise boat, a hotel and a convention center.Moody Gardens is a Awesome Place For Vacations.

Four Corners Monument

The Four Corners Monument marks the quadripoint in the Southwestern United States where the states of Arizona, Colorado,New Mexico and Utah meet. It is the only point in the United States shared by four states, leading to this area being called the Four Corners  Monument region. The monument also marks the boundary between two semi-autonomous native American governments, theNavajo Nation, which maintains the monument as a tourist attraction, and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe Reservation.

The origins of the state boundaries marked by the monument occurred during the American Civil War, when the United States Congress acted to form governments in the area to combat Confederate ambitions for the region. Claims are sometimes made that the monument was misplaced in the initial surveys. The accuracy of the surveys has been defended by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey and the monument has been legally established as the corner of the four states.

Bodie Ghost Town

An original ghost town from the late 1800’s. Bodie Ghost Town stands today in a state of “arrested decay”. So coined by the State of California when they took over the town in 1962 to make it a State Historic Park. In 1859 William (a.k.a. Waterman) S. Bodey discovered gold near what is now called Bodie Ghost Town Bluff. A mill was established in 1861 and the town began to grow. It started with about 20 miners and grew to an estimated 10,000 people by 1880! By that time, the town of Bodie Ghost Town bustled with families, robbers, miners, store owners, gunfighters and prostitutes of all kinds. At one time there was reported to be 65 saloons in town. Amongst the saloons were numerous brothels and ‘houses of ill repute’, gambling halls and opium dens. Needless to say that there was entertainment for every taste.After a long day working the claims, the miners would head for the bars and the red light district to spend their earnings. The mixture of money, gold and alcohol would often prove fatal. It is said that there was a man killed every day in Bodie Ghost Town. Presumably, the undertaker never had a slow day.
